Instead of using regular whole milk, use skim milk. Substitute white flour with whole grain flour. Use lean meats instead of red meat. Use vegetable oil when cooking and boil, bake, or roast instead of fry.
Fourth – Use vegetables more when cooking. You could use rosemary with peas, cauliflower or squash. Try using oregano with your zucchini or even dill with green beans. One already popular combination is basil with tomatoes. This adds a great flavor that you can enjoy.
Fifth – If you use vegetable oil make sure it contains no more than two grams of saturated fat for each tablespoon. You can use this to brown your lean meats, sauté onions or other vegetables. You can also use vegetable oil when browning rice or making casseroles with dried beans or peas.
Sixth – Modify your recipes and cooking habits. Choose lean meats and cut off fat before cooking the meat. Make smaller portions and try less meat dishes using pasta, beans, vegetables or rice. Rice can be used with many different food products. Broil, bake, steam, roast, poach, sauté, stir-fry or boil your foods instead of frying if possible.
Seventh – Watch your intake of sodium and salt. Many foods contain a high percentage of sodium or salt and we eat them without paying attention. High sodium can increase your blood pressure which increases your heart disease risks. Some of the foods containing high sodium are cheese, pickles, ketchup and mustard, canned veggies, bacon and cured meats.
Another great way to watch your cholesterol is when eating out ask for no salt added to your foods. If you want something cooked a certain way, ask them to do it for you. Most restaurants will gladly oblige to satisfy their customers. Watch the label on everything you eat.
